Aloha to all,

You never know what you miss until you don’t have it, or if it’s taken away from you. We in America do take things that we have for granted. I am specifically speaking of the basic need to depose of the body’s waste. Going to the bathroom. I bet you never gave it a second thought except if you got there and someone was in there and you desperately needed to go.

Well if you remember me telling you that here in Iraq we have porta johns and those are all outside. I never gave it a second thought until yesterday afternoon and this morning. I know to some of you this must be silly or minor but when you are faced with the situation at hand you really, really would give it a second and third thinking over.

I will start with yesterday. It was about 3 pm in the afternoon and it was quite hot. When nature calls whether it’s early in the morning or anytime of the day, this is one of the time that you really listen and obey His calling and do what you have to do. So saying that, at 3pm here in Iraq, that is about the hottest time of the day and when you get into one of these porta johns, it is hot, I mean if the out side temperature is 118, then its at least 10 or more degrees hotter on the inside. It is like a sauna, which I guess I shouldn’t complain because you lose weight two ways. So that’s in the afternoon.

Now comes the better of the two. If you have to go in the morning, it’s cooler and not a sauna. It has just been cleaned and emptied out. So you say what is the problem, everything should be good, right? Now you know that nothing is perfect. When you first go in, the toilet seats are wet because they don’t wipe it down after they clean the insides, I hope that is only water on the seat, so you have to wipe it down and dry it out. Now after they empty the contents they replace it with blue liquid to counter act the odors and other “things” that is deposited during your business. Now here lays the problem. Have you ever dropped a rock into a pond? Exactly there is a splash, and guess where that splash goes, right again, straight up and what’s there? So there lies the dilemma in the whole thing.

If you go in the afternoon you lose weight two ways. If you go in the morning you get the clean, emptied, and the splash of the blue liquid.

So for all of you in the good ole USA, just appreciate what you have and don’t take things for granted.

From someone who will definitely appreciate the simple things back home.
